Biological Injectables for OA; What, When and Why? Questions and Case Discussions

Description

In this educational session, healthcare professionals discuss the assessment and management of knee pain, focusing on two specific case studies involving patients with differing knee issues. The first case details a 37-year-old female with a history of patellar dislocation and knee pain. Examination revealed normal alignment and range of motion but MRI indicated trochlear dysplasia and grade two changes to the patellar cartilage. Experts deliberate on potential treatment pathways, emphasizing the importance of identifying mechanical causes of pain rather than leaping to biological treatments which may not address the core issue.

In the second case, a 58-year-old woman experiencing pain from a previous ACL injury is evaluated. She exhibits degenerative changes in her knee joint despite treatments. The discussion highlights the limitations of current therapies and the necessity for biomechanical intervention. The panel stresses patient education and robust discussions about treatment options, suggesting the use of corticosteroids and physiotherapy while acknowledging the failings of previous therapies. They call for more comprehensive studies to substantiate various treatment modalities such as PRP and autologous anti-inflammatory therapies, pointing out the need for evidence-based practice in orthopedics.
